Shockling

The Atlanta Falcons have signed perennially underwhelming QB Joey Harrington to a two-year contract. He will now battle former Georgia Bulldog DJ Shockley and veteran Chris Redman for the second-string position behind starter Michael Vick - and either Shockley or Redman will certainly be cut at the end of preseason.

If coach Bobby Petrino wants to get off on a wretched, couldn't-be-worse start with his new fanbase, he will send Shockley packing.

Remember that old 2002 quarterback debate, by the way? You know, the constant arguments over who would be the better NFL signal-caller, David Carr (taken first overall) or Harrington (taken third)? Yeah, that worked out.

Well, Harrington was at least slightly whelming against the Lions last season, though I have yet to see him perform that well against any teams that didn't trade him for a sixth-rounder.

I don't know what the fuck they were thinking with Redman, though. This is a guy whom the Ravens deemed inferior to both Jeff Blake and Kyle fucking Boller at various points in his career. Dude has Arena League written all over him.

Redman played under Petrino at Louisville. So the new coach is obviously pulling a Spurrier and grabbing his college QBs. And I'll say it again: Yeah, that worked out.

I'm hoping that all Redman does is stick around to help install the offense (which he knows from college), and then moves into an asst. coach or consultant role. You're right -- cutting DJ right off the bat would be horrific for a team that showed signs of overcoming their previous anti-UGA bias. If DJ stays on the roster, I have no problem with Harrington as a stop gap measure.

I think Joey Harrington is trying to be the mid-2000s answer to Jeff George, only he doesn't even have George's ricockulous arm (but he can play mean jazz piano, and we all know, from Bryan Scott, how well that translates to football...)

I'm hoping that D.J. just wins the second spot flat-out. Sure he doesn't have the experience in-game of Joey, but that can be a good thing. Surely a DGD can beat a lame ex-Duck

I don't see any way DJ wins the second spot, though I would absolutely celebrate if it happened.

And I've said it before, but I'll say it again: Jeff George had the single best arm I've ever seen in football. If only it weren't for that hollow head...

Jeff George was the original Ebby Calvin LaLoosh (bad mullet, million dollar arm, five cent head) only without a Crash Davis or Annie Savoy to make him less of a punk ass. (I'm assuming Jason Whitlock tried, at least).

Well, that was anti-climactic. Petrino said today that Harrington is definitely the second-string QB. If he cuts Shockley, I will have a really hard time rooting for this coach (mostly because my Shockley Falcons jersey would be moot).

Moot, perhaps, but also a collector's item.

The more I think about it, the more I can't possibly imagine them justifiably cutting Shockley in favor of Redman.

I'm just hoping Petrino can see past his college player and pick mine. Younger, more innate talent, a better arm - I mean, come on! I'm already getting pissed at Petrino just thinking about the possibility.
